DIY Toyshop Emporium Ornament Kit – Unfinished

Create your own miniature old-world toy shop with this dimensional DIY Toyshop Emporium Ornament Kit, a Rooster Cottage Original.

This 3D-printed DIY kit features an ornate storefront, recessed display shelves, miniature toys, a clear faux-glass window, and battery-operated fairy lights so the finished shop can glow from within.

The shelves have been designed with a slight curve to help the lights at the top and bottom illuminate the center shelf as well.

The piece also includes a pre-made opening for the top hanger and three additional openings for positioning the fairy lights.

LIGHTING

The included fairy-light strand may be shortened to fit your project, and the lights will continue to work after the excess strand is cut off.

For my sample, I left four lights on the strand and cut off the remaining lights.

Three of the lights were inserted into the designated openings. I needed to leave the fourth light in place so there would be enough wire length to properly position the other three lights, so I simply painted over the extra bulb to hide it.

After positioning the three lights through the openings, I secured the wires on the back with a small dab of hot glue.

For the battery/control box, I created a simple holder using a section of an empty paper towel tube and hot glued it to the back of the piece.

FAUX GLASS WINDOW

Before gluing the top façade section in place, position the included clear plastic faux-glass insert behind the storefront opening.

The clear plastic insert is designed to be sandwiched between the front façade and the recessed shelf/back section to create the appearance of glass.

Once the insert is positioned correctly, glue the façade into place.

ADHESIVE NOTE

Do not use super glue near the clear plastic faux-glass window.

Super glue fumes can cause clear plastic to become cloudy or fogged.

I recommend Titebond Quick & Thick Multi-Surface Glue for assembling this kit.

PREPARING FOR PAINT

For my own kits, I apply one light coat of Krylon Clear Matte Protective Spray before painting.

I have found that this helps acrylic and craft paint adhere nicely while still preserving the small details of the 3D print.

Allow the clear coat to dry completely before painting.

Because each piece is individually 3D printed, minor layer lines or small surface variations are normal and are not considered defects.
